Motor vehicle accidents can be brutal and claim lives. One such horrific tragedy happened in the Bronx when a 7-year old child lost his life after being fatally struck by an MTA bus.
The Details of the Accident:
The deceased hails from Brooklyn and has been identified as Shevon Bethea. This accident happened around 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of East 184th Street and Webster Avenue in Fordham Heights. He was riding his battery power scooter when the accident occurred.
What About the Bus?
The police are now investigating this accident. According to police reports, a 38-year old man was driving the bus south on Webster Avenue when it hit the boy. The bus stopped approximately a block away from the scene. The bus driver remained present at the scene.
A team of paramedics arrived soon after and rushed Shevon to St. Barnabus Hospital. He was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Witnesses Say:
According to the witnesses of this tragedy, Shevon was zooming down the sidewalk. He then came down the hill and entered the street. This is the first reason why the bus driver did not see the boy in time.
The driver also had the green light, as confirmed by the police.
According to witnesses, the sidewalk being tucked behind a building blocked the driver’s line of sight, creating a blind-spot for the driver while he was driving the bus towards Webster Avenue.
Statement by an MTA Official:
An MTA official has released a statement in this matter saying,
“This is a tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this young boy. We are working closely with police.”
